You Are Not Your Own

Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 CSB

But with Christ, your body is God’s temple.

Paul gives the members of the Church at Corinth, and us, a unique perspective on our bodies. When Jesus died for each of us on the cross, He bought or ransomed us, and our bodies, with His blood, offering us the gift of salvation. Jesus paid the price instead of us. And upon accepting that gift through belief and faith, the Holy Spirit indwells us, our bodies, as His temple.

It’s a bit overwhelming to think of our bodies as a temple or church of the Holy Spirit. But Paul tells us that they are, and we already know that the Spirit is with us always. Are there things you wouldn’t do or say in a church or a temple? Paul also reminds us that we are not only to remember whose we are (for we are not our own) but that we are to glorify God with our bodies.

If we are to use our God given gifts for His glory, like writing, or preaching, or singing, or working with children, or any others He has gifted to us, then why not our bodies also? What does that look like? Maybe we do those things that we know would please God? Being kind, forgiving others, helping those in need, praying for the sick, doing a chore for someone who can’t? You get the idea.

This week, let’s look at our bodies from Paul’s perspective. Perhaps even God’s perspective, as His dwelling place with us. How can we glorify our Lord daily with our bodies? We can never repay the debt that Christ paid for us, but we can use our bodies to be more like Him in all our interactions with others.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we gain a new perspective on our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit.

Blessings as we glorify our God with our bodies!
