What Do We Boast About?

“This is what the LORD says: The wise person should not boast in his wisdom; the strong should not boast in his strength; the wealthy should not boast in his wealth. But the one who boasts should boast in this: that he understands and knows me – that I am the LORD, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things. This is the LORD’s declaration.” Jeremiah 9:23-24 CSB

This toadstool pops up to boast about God’s provision of a warm summer rain. All creation boasts of it’s Creator.

Jeremiah was called by God as a young man, appointed “to uproot and tear down, to destroy and demolish, to build and plant.” Jeremiah 1:10b CSB Jeremiah spoke the words of God to the people of Judah and Israel before their exile to Babylon, detailing their sins against God and calling for repentance.

Boast means to “talk with excessive pride and self-satisfaction about one’s achievements, possessions, or abilities.” In the KJV the word glory is used. What should a person glory in? Glory means “to take great pride or pleasure in.” So very similar but boast is a bit more external as we are verbalizing our pride to others.

I have to admit it, but all the social media outlets come to mind. What do we boast about, post about and who do we follow? Do we boast about knowledge, strength, wealth, social standing, our accomplishments, our abilities, our “idols?”

But the LORD gives the answer to all of us, through Jeremiah. We should boast, we should glory – that the LORD is who He is, that He loves us faithfully, that He upholds justice, and shows righteousness on the earth. God delights in these, and we should boast about Him.

This week let’s boast about and glory in our Lord. Let’s boast about His love, what He has done for us, how He has blessed and taken care of us, how our prayers have been answered, and how He desires for each of us to know Him more.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we boast, not in ourselves, but in the LORD our God.

Blessings as we boast about our Lord!
