“He shall receive blessings from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.” Psalms 24:5
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
As I write my 27th blog post, I realize that I have been at it for 6 months now. Some weeks were difficult and I was hard pressed to complete the two posts with everything else that had to be done. Some weeks I felt as though God’s words flowed through me and the posts just “wrote themselves”. But every week I enjoyed the task and the research and the closeness with God that I felt more and more often. So today I am taking the time to stop and count my blessings and thank God.
Sometimes, when days and weeks seem to be rushing by and all we can think about is everything that has to get done, we need to stop and count our blessings. Our minds get filled with what’s on our calendar for today, where do we have to be and when, what are the kid’s activities, and who needs us today. We tend to say, “if only I had an extra minute I’d read my Bible”, but that extra minute never seems to come.
Taking the time to look at all of God’s blessings in our lives and thanking Him for them helps to readjust our attitude and perspective. I know that sometimes I tend to focus on the negative, on what I can’t seem to get done, on the “if only” I had more time, on what I am forgetting. When I see only the short time and difficult issues, I realize I am depending solely on myself. But when I invite God to share my burdens and thank Him for all the blessings He has given me, I can reset my priorities and my outlook and my peace.
Today, I thank God for the blessing of writing, this blog and my children’s stories. I thank God for the blessing of a supportive family. First, my husband who takes up the slack when I am “in the mood” and writing and other things don’t get done. My son who helped me set up the blog pages and gives advice on all sorts of computer and camera questions. My daughter who encourages and motivates me to continue in my “third career” and helps with social media issues.
I also want to take the opportunity and time to thank each and every person who has read, or liked, or commented, or responded to the blog posts. It means so much to me. It gives me encouragement and purpose and the desire to continue writing. I thank you! And I thank God for you. I also thank God for all the wonderful bloggers whose posts I enjoy reading and who inspire me.
I thank God for my friends. I thank God for being able to live in a small corner of His beautiful creation. I thank God for all the many blessings in my life, too many to really count! From the very smallest, that the sunset was glorious, to the biggest, God’s saving grace!
I actually sat down one day when I was feeling dejected and alone and wrote down in a journal all the blessings I could think of; where God had worked something special in my life. Amazingly, it took 3 pages, and I continue adding to it!
This week take the time to thank God for all the blessings in your life, from the smallest to the biggest. If you like, write them down so that you can re-read them over and over whenever your attitude and perspective need a little adjustment. It is miraculous how thanking God for our blessings turns into peace and love.
I thank God for each of you and I thank you for joining me today to count our blessings and thank God for them.
