Wait For the Lord

“But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 ESV

Waiting…probably one of our least favorite things to do. First, a comment about waiting in our current world. With all the technology and convenience of this modern world we live in, we are spoiled in that we don’t have to wait for a lot of things. Food can be delivered to our homes or picked up in minutes at a drive-through window. If we want to find some information, we go online and look it up, no more driving to the library to do research. When we want to apply for a job, the application is online. We can email and text and Zoom and Facetime!

Second, when we do have to wait for any length of time, we tend to get a bit frustrated or upset. But we do have help in our waiting…the Lord waits with us.

One of the fruits of the spirit is patience. I love that in many translations this gift is called “longsuffering!” Longsuffering is defined as showing patience in spite of troubles. Sometimes waiting on God’s timing can feel like longsuffering, but His timing and His plan are always for our good.

The simple fact is that God’s time and our time are not the same. However, we have some wonderful promises in the Bible about waiting on God. In addition to Isaiah above, a couple more are:

“Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” Psalms 27:14 ESV

“Wait for the LORD and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land…” Psalms 37:34 ESV

Waiting on God may involve letting go of things we expect or desire for our lives. But God has a different and better plan for us if we can trust and wait. One of my constant comforts to my children, when something they wanted more than anything didn’t happen, was that it was not meant to be. God has something more spectacular planned for you. And usually they realized it later (sometimes much later!) as events did fall into place, just not as they had expected or when they expected.

I am still waiting on healing for some of my health issues. But I trust and wait and understand that like Paul, His grace is sufficient for me. Maybe God has a plan for me to help someone else with the same issues. I will continue to wait on God’s timing. But while I wait, I thank God for He has blessed my life in so many other innumerable ways! “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good…” Romans 8:28 ESV

This week take your waiting times and thank God for all that He has accomplished in your life. Let your stress become peace. Let your heartache become healing. Let your sickness become comfort. Let your anxiety become trust. And we will wait for God, and with God, as he works for good in our lives!

Blessings and strength to soar as we wait on the Lord!

  1. Isaiah 40:31 reminds me of an old song by the Christian rock band Petra, “More Power to Ya” from their 1982 album by the same name (If you’ve never heard Petra’s songs, you should give them a listen if you get a chance). And you’re right: the waiting is the hardest part (according to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers–I’m flexing my inane and pointless music trivia this morning). I’ve been waiting on certain things in my life for decades and I imagine they’ll never come to pass at this point (ex: healing for my deafness). Patience can be a bitter pill to swallow sometimes. And speaking of patience, here’s a little rhyme my mom used to tell me when I was a tiny boy:

    Patience is a virtue;

    Virtue is a grace;

    And Grace is a little girl

    Who doesn’t wash her face.”

    (She heard that verse somewhere; the irony is her middle name was Grace. 😃)

    Always a pleasure to read you, my friend. I hope the rest of your week is peaceful. 😊

    • Mike, love the song references! The 70’s and 80’s were my music, too. And your mom’s poem about grace, so sweet, makes me wonder if her mom sang it to her.

      My mom had a poem she used to recite to me (I had curly hair)

      There was a little girl, who had a little curl,
      Right in the middle of her forehead,
      And when she was good, she was very,very good,
      But when she was bad, she was horrid! 🤣

      Think she was trying to tell me something??

      Thank you, Mike, I so appreciate and value your friendship and encouragement! Blessings!
