I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved – he who keeps you will not slumber. Psalm 121:1-3 ESV
The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 121:7-8 ESV

We look up to the hills, the mountain tops because our help comes from the Lord of heaven.
This was my grandmother’s favorite verse, so today I’m remembering her by sharing it with you.
The author of our verse today is lifting his eyes to the “hills”, the mountains, and looking for help. Where do you think he’s standing if he’s looking up to the mountain? You’re right, probably down in the valley at the foot of the mountain. Maybe he’s thinking about hiking up the mountain and needs some help. And who does our verse say he looks to for help?
Right again, the Lord! God, who made it all, the heavens and the earth, the valleys and the mountains, the sun and the stars, and each one of us. The Lord helps us to climb our mountains. He gives us strength and walks with us. He watches over us. Have you ever hiked up a mountain? It’s hard because it is uphill and sometimes rocky. But the view from the top is amazing!
You may not have a real mountain to climb, but we all have “mountains” in our lives. Your “mountain” might be something really hard to do or a task that seems too big to finish. When my son was little, he used to think that cleaning his room was a “mountain” that he couldn’t or didn’t want to hike. But he learned that if he did one thing at a time, just like taking one step at a time up a mountain, and then another and another, pretty soon he was at the “mountain top”. His room was finished, and he was happy to go play!
Whatever your mountain is, you can know that the Lord is with you as He promises in these verses and that He is your help you as you hike your mountain, one step at a time. The Lord will watch over you and keep your foot from slipping. So, look to the Lord and hike with Him to your mountain top.
This week talk with your parents about what one of your “mountains” might be. Together ask the Lord for His help and guidance. Talk about the best way to climb your mountain and hike with the Lord all the way to the mountain top. I know you will be a wonderful “hiker!”
Blessings and joy as you reach the mountain top with the Lord!
The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir has a version of this song, which our choir did regularly. Now it’s stuck in my head. It is a very powerful psalm. Humbling and empowering at the same time. ALL of my help comes from the lord.
