Our Hope in God is Our Anchor

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:19a NIV

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.  I Corinthians 13:13 ESV

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Romans 12:12 ESV

Sailboats anchored off the Portland, Maine coast.

I love the imagery of an anchored boat as a metaphor for our faith in God, our hope in His promises, and His everlasting, ever-present love.

Let me “paint” you a word picture. Imagine there is an old wooden-hulled sailboat lacquered to a golden brown. It rocks gently on the lake’s sun-glistened surface as it rises slightly with each wave’s crest and then dips into the trough. The mast is tall and the sail is down. The anchor rope is tied to the cleat; it slacks and tautens as it firmly holds the boat to the lake’s soft, muddy bottom. Feels peaceful and safe, right?

Faith, hope and love are the foundation of our Christian walk, our salvation.

The lake, the water, is like God’s everlasting love. His love lifts us up and helps us to lift others up. Love sustains us. God’s love surrounds us, and Jesus is our “living water.”

The sailboat is our faith. Faith is believing and trusting. Faith trusts that God will keep His promises to us in this life. Faith keeps us secure in our God even when our lives seem rough and storm-tossed, when troubles come. Faith floats on God’s eternal love.

The anchor is our hope. Hope is our confident expectation that God will care for us. Hope keeps our faith firmly in place. Hope knows that God calls us sons and daughters. Hope knows the presence of God and stands firmly on His promises. Hope keeps us going through difficulties. Hope dispels our doubts. Hope anchors us and our faith in God.

This week, imagine your faith sailing through the waters of God’s all-encompassing love and letting your hope anchor your soul to Him.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we strengthen our faith and hope, within the everlasting love of our Mighty God.

Blessings as you “navigate” through life with the Lord!

  1. Peggy, this is incredibly well-written, and the imagery is so effective. You’ve made this look effortless, my friend. And the message is so important. I’ve not spent a lot of time on boats, but I recall the uneasiness of a small boat on a lake as it bobbed in the waves of the wake of a passing boat. There was no stability, and the fear of capsizing was palpable (I can’t swim). Your analogy is perfect for this particular message of how an anchor can stabilize us, even in times of turbulence and uncertainty.

Always a pleasure to read your work, my friend. Wishing you a good week ahead. 😊⛵⚓
