Jesus Fulfills the Law with Love

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 ESV

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17 ESV

This picture reminds me that we are to go “above and beyond” in order to fulfill the Law.

Jesus begins His ministry in Capernaum in Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and healing all with illnesses and afflictions. As His fame spreads, many people begin to follow Him, listening to His words. Part of Jesus’ message was that God’s kingdom is here. Our second verse is from the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus begins to explain how the Law can be fulfilled by each of us.

Jesus requires that we go above and beyond the Law. One of His first statements is that our righteousness needs to exceed that of the Pharisees and scribes, or we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Wow, the people of that time would have been shocked at this statement! But Jesus is saying outward righteousness to be seen by others is not what God wants. God wants our hearts and our actions to be pleasing to Him.

Jesus gives several examples of “You have heard it said” (the Law), “But I say to you….”

Jesus’statements, paraphrased-

The Law says, “You shall not murder” or you will be judged. But I say if you are angry with your brother, you will also be judged, so be reconciled to your brother.

The Law says, “You shall not commit adultery,” but I say to you anyone who looks a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery in his heart.

The Law says, “if you divorce your wife, you must give her a certificate of divorce,” but I  say to you whoever divorces his wife (except for sexual immorality) causes her to commit adultery.

The Law says, “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth,” but I say to you do not resist evil, turn the other cheek. If someone sues you for your tunic give him your cloak also.

The Law says, “you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy,” but I say to you love you enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may sons of your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus doesn’t change the Law or abolish it. He fulfills and expands the Law with love. More is required of us, more love, more action, and becoming more like Jesus!

This week as we interact with others, let’s all try to be more; more loving, more kind, more helpful, more generous, more understanding, more empathetic, and more like Jesus.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this we as, with Jesus, we go above and beyond the Law.

Blessings and love as you give more!

  1. “Jesus is saying outward righteousness to be seen by others is not what God wants. God wants our hearts and our actions to be pleasing to Him.” This, exactly. So many religious folks wear their self-righteousness like a fancy suit worn only on Sunday mornings, then forget about it for the rest of the week. It’s such a deal-breaker for other people when they come across these folks, and actually discourages people from wanting to learn more about Jesus. Being “righteous” for the wrong reasons is just as bad as not being righteous at all.

Thanks for this timely reminder, Peggy. Wishing you a good week ahead, my friend. 😊🍁🍂

    • Mike, it is so true. I think many of us have been in churches with those kind of “Christians.” And you’re right, that doesn’t really encourage others to want to know Christ. None of us could live up to their standard. Most Christians are regular flawed people, they just know who paid the price for their forgiveness and are thankful.

Thanks, Mike, I so appreciate your comments and support! Blessings and a great week ahead!

  2. The story of the rich young ruler in the gospels always remind me of what’s important to God. We can tick all the boxes we want; attendance to church, tithing, alms giving, law keeping, etc… Jesus simply told him, sell all that you have and follow.. and the rich young ruler turned away.
God wants our hearts above all else.
This is a timely reminder as always Peggy. 🙏🙏
