So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 ESV

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV

Our first verse is part of a prayer of Moses after he finds out that he will not enter the promised land because of his anger. In the first part Moses bemoans the brevity of man in contrast to our everlasting God who created all things. Moses also speaks of the wrath and anger of God and that all our iniquities are before Him. And then verse 12, Moses prays that God will teach all of us to “number our days” in order to get a “heart of wisdom.”

I have read this verse many times, but this past week as I read it again, it spoke to me, it enticed me to find out more. I always assumed it meant that our life here on earth is finite and in knowing that we should take each day as a gift and be thankful. But I have found that it means so much more.

We are to consider our days in light of God’s Word and God’s ways. When we don’t “number our days” then this life is all we have. But when we do number our days, we are looking toward eternity. We are storing up treasures in heaven. When our hearts are mindful of God’s ways and we consider them in our interactions with others, we are becoming wise and given understanding. We are storing up spiritual treasures in heaven.

Do we offer grace to someone who has hurt us, or do we retaliate? Do we forgive a harsh word because we are forgiven by God, or do we “give as good as we get?” Do we give to the needy or walk past them on the street? Do we focus on all that God has blessed us with and bless those we meet? Are we living our purpose, our calling? Harsh questions for all of us, me included.

I think the secret (although it isn’t really a secret), is what would Jesus do? Do you remember those WWJD bracelets? They were popular when my kids were in elementary school. I did leather crafting then and they each made their own with the letters WWJD and wore them. The band was a constant reminder to focus on God’s ways, are we acting and speaking with kindness, wisdom, goodness, and love.

This week let’s all remember to interact with others as Jesus would have, with love and compassion, with tolerance and caring. Let’s find God in His beautiful creation and offer praise and thanks to the Creator. Let’s number our days and have hearts of wisdom.
