Learn to Treasure Every Day

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 ESV

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Matthew 6:20a ESV

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV

Take time to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation and give Him praise and thanks.

Our first verse is from a prayer of Moses. Remember that Moses led God’s people out of Egypt to the promised land. Moses prayed and asked God to teach all of us to “number our days.” Our lives here on earth are short compared to our eternal lives with Jesus and God in heaven one day.

But numbering our days doesn’t really mean to count how many days we might have here on earth, because only God knows that. Numbering our days actually means to make each day count. To treasure each day and try to do what God and Jesus would want us to do.

When my kids were young, they each had a WWJD wristband. Do you know what WWJD stands for? It is the first letter of the phrase, What Would Jesus Do? It was a reminder to think about how Jesus would answer someone or what He might say or do.

When we talk to people, we need to be kind and loving and gentle, just like Jesus. When someone hurts our feelings and they are sorry, we need to be forgiving, just like Jesus. He forgives us when we do something wrong, and we ask Him for forgiveness. We need to take time to pray and rest like Jesus did. We need to slow down and enjoy God’s beautiful creation.

When we go through our days with God and Jesus, we are numbering our days. We are making the most of each day and we are gaining wisdom. When we treat others the way Jesus would we are laying up treasures in heaven. When we take time to enjoy God’s amazing creation and thank Him for His blessings, more treasures in heaven. When we have troubles and pray for help and guidance, more treasures.

This week, try to make each day count. Make it a day with God and Jesus by your side. “Number your days” by deciding WWJD. Think about how to talk with others, how to act, how to help, how to be thankful, how to bless others. And you will “get a heart of wisdom” as you learn to treasure each day!

Blessings and joy as you do what Jesus would do and lay up your treasures in heaven!
