Prayers:  Ask, Seek, and Knock

Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8 CSB

When we pray to Father God, Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock, to boldly take our requests to God in prayer.

Our verses for today come from the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is teaching His disciples, and a large crowd has gathered around them. Jesus is sharing wisdom on many different areas of life. The right way to treat others and God. How to live a life of faithfulness and goodness.

In this part, Jesus is telling all of us how we should to pray to Father God. First, Jesus says “ask.” When we need something from our parents, we ask for it. The same is true for your Father in heaven. Although God knows what you need, He wants you to come to Him and ask.

Next, Jesus says “seek.” To seek something means to search for what we desire. If you misplace your favorite game or book, you will seek it until you find it. If you seek to know God better or to know what His will is for your life, you will read His Word, the Bible, and pray to Him. Seek God and you will find Him!

And lastly, Jesus says to “knock.” Do you stand outside a door and just wait until someone opens it? Or do you knock so that the door will be opened to you? Jesus is saying that we need to knock and keep knocking until God opens a door for us, gives us the opportunity to do something we want. We knock (pray) and God acts.

Let’s talk for a minute about receiving what we ask for, finding what we seek, and a door opening when we knock. When you pray, do you always get everything you ask for? Do you always find what you’re seeking? Do you always have a door opened when you knock? We would all probably answer no.

When we pray we have to trust our Father God. He is always good! He knows what is best for us. He may not give us everything when we ask, or seek, or knock, but He will listen to and answer our prayers in the way that is best for us. Sometimes we get what we desire, sometimes the answer is no, and sometimes the answer is wait. We trust Father God with all our prayers and know that He works all things for our good.

This week pray to Father God, ask to receive, seek to find, and knock to have the door opened. Even if it isn’t exactly what you wanted, trust that God hears all of your prayers and is working your prayers for good in your life.

Blessings and joy as you pray to Father God!
