In the Image of God

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27 NIV

God’s light shining through dark clouds.

Last week we talked about God our Creator. He created everything! And this week I want to continue that idea. This verse is from Genesis when God created the whole world. In this verse I want you to see that not only did God create you as a uniquely wonderful creation, but He created you and all people in His own image.

We are all created in the image of God, we are all His beloved children. First I want you to look at yourself in the mirror (just like last week!). God created you…the color of your eyes, your hair, your skin, your mind, everything. There may be some things about yourself you wish were different, we all would like to change something. But we need to remind ourselves that we are exactly the way God made us and we are so loved by our Father God.

I have curly hair and when I was little I always wanted straight hair like most other girls. But not now, I love my hair and don’t even comb it when I wash it. I just fluff it up and let it dry. I appreciate it as a gift from God. I want each of you to see yourselves as a most awesome creation of God with gifts and talents and a plan for your life. You are made in the image of God by God. You are uniquely you!

But now I want you to think about one more thing. God created all people in His image. Even the kid at school you don’t like very much. Even the “mean” teacher. Even the kids who are different from you or don’t look like you. We all need to start seeing other people as unique creations made in the image of God. We need to see them as loved by God. And if we can see them as God sees them, beloved, we let God’s light shine through us.

This week I want you to do two things. See yourself as a beautiful and loved creation made in the image of God. Then I want you to pick at least one other person (who maybe you have trouble liking) and see them as a unique and wonderful creation made in God’s image. How will you act differently? Will you smile and say hello instead of avoiding them? Will you offer to help? Talk to your parents, they can help you decide on your plan to see someone else as made in God’s image.

Blessings and love as a child made in the image of God!
