“Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.” Psalms 95:2
I am thankful for sunrises! Can you find the star (probably a planet) in the sunrise?
This week we celebrate Thanksgiving! What do you think of when you hear “Thanksgiving”? Do you think of turkey and dressing, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and apple pies, or cranberry sauce? Every family has their own traditions and favorite foods for Thanksgiving. The original Thanksgiving people, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag (native American tribe), had turkey and deer, duck, squash and pumpkins, breads and corn, and probably some seafood like lobster and clams.
We used to go to the beach sometimes at Thanksgiving when our children were younger. We always voted to not have turkey and dressing for Thanksgiving dinner, instead we would go out to dinner and have all kinds of seafood! We didn’t know it at the time, but we were probably eating some of the same things the Pilgrims ate!
We celebrate Thanksgiving as a holiday, but to whom are we “giving thanks”? Who gives all good things to us? You’re right, we give thanks to God. Just like the pilgrims did almost 400 years ago! They were thankful for a bountiful harvest and had a huge meal, a feast, to thank God.
When we give thanks to God for all the good things He has given to us, God is happy and, just like the verse above says, we are in God’s presence. So being thankful to God makes us feel closer to Him. We can thank God with words, with pictures, with songs and shouts of joy!
I Give Thanks to God
Thank You, God, for all the good things you give to me.
Hands that can clap and play and draw and pray.
Animals for loving, dogs, cats, rabbits, and gerbils.
Nature, the earth, the sea, the sky, are Your creation,
Kisses from my mom and dad who love me so much.
Sunrises, sunsets, the sun shining warmly in summer.
This week make a special Thanksgiving card for God. Fold a regular sized piece of paper in half. Draw or paste a beautiful picture on the front half. Open it up, and on the inside, write sentences or draw pictures of all the things you want to thank God for. You can choose things like mom and dad, family, friends, church, or anything you are thankful for. On the back half, sign your name. Even though God already knows you and is happy you are giving thanks to Him!
Afterwards you can place your card on the table so that God’s presence is with you as you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family. Happy Thanksgiving!!
