Jesus: the Way, the Truth, the Life

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6 NLT

Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 1 John 5:12 NLT

I am not very good with directions, or finding my way in unfamiliar territory. I used to write down directions to follow, but I would still sometimes miss a turn and have to backtrack. I was ecstatic when GPS devices came out. And Google Maps is now my constant driving companion. I can listen to and see the way I am supposed to go.

When it comes to spiritual paths to God, there is only one way – Jesus. In our first verse from John, Jesus is with His disciples in the upper room where they had just celebrated the Passover. Jesus tells them that His time has come to glorify the Father and that He will prepare a place for them. Jesus also says, “And you know the way to where I am going.” John 14:4 Thomas says they have no idea where Jesus is going so how can they know the way. Jesus replies with our verse from John. Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6

In John 17, Jesus is praying for His disciples before He is to be taken and crucified. Jesus prays, “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” John 17:17 Jesus is the Word, He is the truth of God, and the truth, the Word, can make us holy, the truth sanctifies us.

Jesus is the source of all life. We go back to John 1:1-4 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.

Jesus came to give life to all who would believe on Him. Jesus gives us abundant life here on earth and eternal life in heaven with Him. Our second verse above tells us that when we have “the Son” we have life. When we journey with Jesus through life, we love God and others, and we have purpose and joy in life now and forever.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we proclaim that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life for all.

Blessings and abundant life in the Son!
