“And why is this granted to me [Elizabeth] that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” Luke 1:43-45 ESV
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.” Luke 1:46-47 ESV

This Christmas season we’ve talked about “waiting” for the Messiah and the “wonders” and prophecies of the birth of Jesus. Today we look at three “witnesses” of God’s greatness and power. A witness is someone who sees or experiences something important happening and tells others about it.
Mary and Elizabeth were cousins, and both had a miracle gift from God!
Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, a priest who served in the Temple, were “righteous before God” but they had no children. One day when Zechariah was in the Temple an angel appeared to him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife will bear a son, and you shall call his name John.” Luke 1:13 Zechariah was a witness to the angel and he and Elizabeth were witnesses to God’s great power that she was pregnant with a son!
A few months later, the angel, Gabriel, appeared to Mary and told her she was to be the mother of the son of the Most High God and that his name would be called Jesus. She was a witness to the angel, to her pregnancy, and to her joy in God’s great power. Mary actually sings a song of praise to the Lord. The beginning of her song is our second quoted verses; her song is called The Magnificat. Luke 1:46-55
And these three witnesses didn’t keep God’s greatness and power a secret. (Although Zechariah was unable to speak until their son was born because he questioned how this might happen.) They told others, they shared their good news so that it could be recorded for us to read today. So that we can see God’s greatness and power today.
This week be a witness, share something that God has done for you with others. You can even leave it as a comment to this blog, so that we can all see God’s greatness and power.
I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we look at witnesses of the conception of John the Baptist and Jesus and share our own stories of God’s greatness and power in our lives.
Blessings and joy as we continue our Christmas journey!
