The Power of Prayer

In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. John 16:23, 24b ESV

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Matthew 6:9-13 ESV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

I always think about prayers drifting up to God’s ears in heaven like wispy clouds.

The power of our prayers relies not on any power we possess. The power of prayer relies solely on the Almighty power of God as we enter into His presence and the promised power of praying in Jesus’ name. Jesus also gave His disciples, and us, an example of prayer, what we call The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew.

I will admit that sometimes when I am frustrated, or tired, or unsure of what exactly I want to pray, I sometimes start with the Lord’s Prayer. Once in God’s presence, worship and thanks come more easily and peace settles in my heart.

Sometimes a prayer is silent, just being with God, “listening” for the nudging of the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes a prayer is weeping, sharing your hurt and pain with the Lord.

Sometimes a prayer is a celebration thanking the Lord for an answered prayer with joy.

Sometimes a prayer is a plea for healing and strength, trusting in His power.

Sometimes a prayer is seeking God’s will for our lives, defining our purpose.

Sometimes a prayer is simply a cry for companionship with our Almighty God and Savior.

Whatever our prayers we know that God hears them. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 1 John 5:14

I believe that honesty with ourselves and God is also important, after all He already knows our hearts and our thoughts. Let’s all simply bring our honest, heartfelt prayers before Him, rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, and giving Him the thanks and glory in everything.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we look at the power of our prayers.

Blessings and joy, and answered prayers for each of you!

  1. Oh, Peggy, I’m not going to lie–sometimes the silence I hear when I pray is absolutely deafening (which is pretty “silent” for a deaf guy). Sometimes I give up, dejected and exhausted from my troubles, with no end in sight. I envy those who persevere and hope their prayers are answered. I think of all the times I’ve sent my supplications for people I’ve loved and watched as nothing happened and things continued to worsen. It’s really hard at times to keep the faith.

I’m glad you’re writing these pieces. Some of us have no one in our lives to encourage us to keep trying, to keep seeking the light. You really are doing God’s work here. Please keep writing, my friend. Some of us desperately need what you’re providing here. 🙏

    • Mike, I appreciate you! Your comments and kindness abound. Please know that much of what I write, I write to myself as well. I, too, have dealt with the silence, with prayers not answered as well as some that have been answered.
My children’s book manuscripts have been rejected numerous times even though I believed this was my calling. I have to chosen to trust that God works all things to my good. I don’t know where that will lead….but I keep praying and following.
Blessings and prayers, my dear friend.
