To Be Foolish or To Be Wise

The rainbow is one of God’s promises to us. God also promises to give us wisdom if we ask.

Tomorrow is April Fools’ Day! You know I love history, but there seems to be no consensus on the origin of April Fools’ Day.

Some say from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in 1392, when Chanticleer is tricked by a fox on a day that is “since March began, full thirty and two days” which would have been April 1st.

French poet, Eloy d’ Amerval references an April Fool or literally an “April fish” in one of his poems in 1508.

Flemish poet, Edward Aubrey, referred to a Fooles Holy Day and tricked people into going into the Tower of London to see the lions washed in 1561.

And some even suggest it dates back to Noah and the ark when Noah released a dove before the water had even abated.

So, take your pick and see if you can “fool” a friend into believing one of these! But be kind.

The Bible gives us many verses on fools and the wise, here are just a few:

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.

Proverbs 18:2  A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in expressing his opinion.

Ephesians 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

Tomorrow, be on the lookout for tricks and pranks but have fun. Be a good sport if you do get “fooled.” And be kind if you are the fooler. The rest of the week let’s all concentrate on striving to be wise because wisdom comes from God who gives generously when we ask. Let’s strive to seek out God’s wisdom and His will for our lives.

I thank God for each one of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we appreciate April Fools’ Day but continue on our journey to be wise.

Blessings and wisdom!

  1. Lovely historical tidbits, Peggy.
I am always reminding myself of the verse ‘the fool has said in his heart…’ and I would sometimes add my own ending, depending on the dumb choices I make.
And believe me, there have been many 🤣🤣
