Joseph and Mary Journey to Bethlehem

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. Luke 2: 1,4-5 ESV

This is a mountain in Israel that Mary and Joseph may have journeyed near on their way to Bethlehem.

When I was young, my family would travel to my Grandparents home in Indianapolis, Indiana for holidays. The journey was about 6 hours in our station wagon. My parents both worked and so we would leave about six or seven o’clock in the evening. My mom made and packed hot sandwiches and drinks so we could eat dinner on the way. Does your family like to go on journeys? Where do you go or where would you like to go?

Our verses for today tell us about a journey that Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus, and Joseph had to take. Because Joseph was a descendant of King David, they had to go to Bethlehem to be counted by the Roman government. But back in that time there were no cars or trains or airplanes. Most people walked or maybe rode on an animal, like a donkey or camel.

Mary and Joseph had to walk from Nazareth, where they lived, to Bethlehem which was 90 miles away! Experts agree that it could have taken 4 or 5 days or even up to a week to walk that distance. Mary was pregnant with Jesus and she and Joseph might have gone slower. They journeyed with other travelers to Bethlehem and had to walk hilly areas, a desert, and even forested valleys.

Many pictures show Mary riding a donkey that Joseph is leading, but the Bible doesn’t have that detail. I hope she did have a donkey on that long of a journey. Travelers also had to bring food and water with them. it would have been a long and difficult journey and very tiring. But God was with them and gave them strength and safety and they arrived in Bethlehem.

We can look at our lives as a journey. Some days are good, some are difficult, many times we need help and encouragement. But just like Mary and Joseph, God is with us! He can give us strength, courage, comfort, hope, peace, and joy. Talk with your parents about how you can journey with God each day. He will be with you as you journey through your life.

Blessings and joyful days as you journey with God!
