Choose to Rejoice!

Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. Habakkuk 3:17-18 ESV

When the storms of life come, we can be overwhelmed or we can choose to rejoice in the Lord.

Habakkuk was a prophet in Judah before the Babylonian invasion and the destruction of Jerusalem. Much of his book is a mourning that God is silent, turned away from His people, and bringing devastation. But it is also sprinkled with reminders of a good God and joy. Joy is defined as “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.”

My mom loved musicals, and we would watch them together. We watched The Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The King and I and so many more. But one of my mom’s favorites was The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Which by the way, inspired the attitude we should have regarding our troubles. “Unsinkable” is a way of looking at life. We can emulate that “unsinkable” mentality when we acknowledge our troubles, but still choose to express our joy in our Lord. He is our Savior, our comforter, our strength and our refuge. Our relationship with God is of more value than anything else we may possess, or lose, and that is the joy.

When we are in the throes of trouble, and the present times may be the perfect example, we can still rejoice that our God is with us! Our current troubles might include the political unease, the death of a loved one, a failed relationship, or financial issues. But whatever our troubles, we can continue to have “unsinkable” joy because our God, our Savior, our Lord is with us. Carrying us, sharing our burdens, comforting us, keeping His promises, and loving us through it all. We can choose to rejoice!

This week let’s all try to remain “unsinkable” in the midst of troubles. Rise above the flood of anxiety and openly express your joy in being a child of God, of being protected, of being loved and of being in communication with the Creator of everything!

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we seek to rise above the troubled waters and demonstrate our “unsinkable” joy.

Blessings and joy!

  1. rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice.

this is a wonderful post Peggy. I heard a preacher once, speaking of Jesus walking on water.. that it’s a reminder to us that when we feel like we’re sinking, remember that what may be above our heads, is still under the master’s feet.

btw.. The King and I, and The sound of Music are two of my favorite movies. 💕💕

  2. I recall watching The Unsinkable Molly Brown as a kid on the local tv station’s daily afternoon movie program. My mom loved it. Staying afloat in times like these is almost more than a lot of us can handle. I won’t lie–I’m struggling since so much rides on the election, and what that means for people like me who are disabled and rely on social safety net programs to survive. Trying to focus on hope seems like a fool’s errand, but there’s nothing else I can do today. It’s out of my hands. There’s a weird calmness, however, a sort of inexplicable stillness right now. I hope it carries over throughout the night and offers reassurance that kindness and compassion will win the day.

Thanks for your timely messages, Peggy. Keep shining your light, my friend. 😊🕯️

    • Thank you, Mike, for your kindness and your encouraging support!! Such troubled times, watching election coverage now. I understand your concern. But I also feel that same calmness…waiting, and knowing that God doesn’t change. Hoping with you, my friend! 😊
