Words of Hope and Life

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my [Jesus’] words will not pass away. Luke 21:33 ESV

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:24 ESV

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21 ESV

The words that I [Jesus] have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 6:63b ESV

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Colossians 4:6 ESV

A beautiful sunrise is God’s sharing of hope and life.

All of our verses today focus on words. Jesus tells us than His words are spirit and life and will never pass away. Paul and Proverbs advise us to choose gracious (kind, courteous, and compassionate) words when we talk with others because “death and life” are in the power of the tongue!

Words

We use them everyday to communicate with others.

Spoken words and written words to sisters and brothers.

What words do we choose? Words that give life?

Or do we choose words that cause only strife?

Choose kindness and offer words of help and hope.

Speak encouragement to help someone else cope.

Show compassion and comfort someone who grieves.

Share a prayer and strengthen someone who believes.

Prayer

Lord, let my words always be gracious and sweet.

Let my words shine Your light to all I may meet.

Let me hide your words in my heart and mind.

Let me choose words, with Your will aligned.

This week let’s all remember, as we communicate with others, to let our words give encouragement, comfort, empathy, hope and life.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me as we consider the impact of our words.

Blessings and joy as we all choose gracious words!

  1. Words certainly have power. They can hurt worse that bruises and broken bones, and their wounds tend to take much longer to heal (if they ever do). It’s so easy to spread kindness and takes such effort to spew hatred, yet it’s so shocking that so many people not only use hateful words, but worship those who do as well. It’s a sign of the times, I suppose, and so disheartening. Thanks, Peggy, for advocating for kindness in our daily speech. It can change the world for the better for those who need a bit of compassion. 😊

I immediately thought of those words as I read your post.
