Names of Jesus!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 ESV

This is one of my favorite paintings of Jesus. Many pictures or paintings show Jesus as very serious. But Jesus was also joyful and happy. He loved people and cared for them. He attended a wedding and shared many dinners with friends and followers. So as we look at the names of Jesus remember that everything He did, He did with us in mind. “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Over the years we have all had several names, or roles in life. I was a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a student, a babysitter, a teacher, a wife, a mom, a writer, and I am happy to announce I have added a new name to my list, grandmother!

Jesus is called by many names in the Bible. In our verse alone, Isaiah gives the coming Messiah (another name for Jesus) four different names. Jesus often called Himself the Son of Man, but the disciples and other followers and us, call Him the Son of God. In John 1:41 Andrew tells his brother Simon that “we have found the Messiah.” In John 6:48 Jesus says He is the bread of life. In John4:10 Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well that He can give her living water and she will never be thirsty again. She is also the only person to whom Jesus confessed that He was the Messiah.

His disciples often called Him Teacher or Rabbi. Jesus is our Lord, our God, our Savior and Redeemer. He is the Christ, the anointed one of God. In Acts 4, Jesus is the Cornerstone and the only “name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” And let’s not forget miracle Healer; the woman who touched His garment, the man born blind, the lame and paralytic, the sick, those with leprosy, casting out demons, and raising many from death. There are 37 recorded miracles in the Bible, but John tells us Jesus did so many more.

Jesus is the Passover Lamb, who willingly gave His life for each and every one of us who believe in His life, death, and resurrection. Through our faith in Jesus, we become the “righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

This week as we consider the many names of Jesus, let us take time to be thankful and offer praise for all the ways He works in our lives.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we look at some of the names of Jesus. Please feel free to share your favorite name for Jesus or any name I have left out in the comments!

Blessings and praise for Jesus and all of His names!

  1. Woot woot… Congratulations grandma Peggy 👏👏
Children are a blessing.. grandchildren are a double blessing. Hope you’re having a blessed week Peggy.
A smiling Jesus is a rarity in traditional Christian art, so I can see why this artwork resonates with you. 🙏
