God’s Mystery

I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches and complete understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery – Christ. In him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:2-3 CSB

The clouds conceal the valleys in front of the mountains as God’s mystery was concealed in the Old Testament.

I love a mystery. When I was young, I read all the Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and Hardy Boys books I could find at the library. I loved picking up clues along the way and seeing if I could figure out the ending before I got to it. Sometimes I was right and sometimes not, but I always picked out another mystery and tried again.

Paul is in prison and writing to the church at Colossae. Although Paul didn’t go to Colossae himself and start the church, a fellow worker, Epaphras, did. And this letter was written by Paul to the church after a visit from Epaphras. The people had a strong faith but there were some false teachers among them. Paul uses his letter to encourage the Colossians and remind them who Christ is and what He has done for them.

In the Old Testament, God’s plan for salvation and a closer relationship with sinful humans made in God’s image, was a mystery, it was concealed, only the law existed. But the clues were there! From the Psalms and Isaiah to Zechariah and Micah, as well as Daniel and Malachi, the prophecies pointed to the Messiah, to Jesus.

Jesus fulfilled all of these Old Testament prophecies. And all the clues were there. The answer of God’s mystery is now revealed. As Paul tells us; “God’s mystery – Christ.” Through Jesus Christ we are reconciled to God the Father. God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Colossians 1:27

This week be a sleuth, find some of the clues in the Old Testament; be encouraged and understand that God’s mystery is our Savior, Jesus Christ. In him are “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we rejoice in God’s mystery revealed, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessings and wisdom!
