Exhortation

“Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ASV

As water reflects, let us reflect the light of the Lord and exhort others to action.

We began December with the expectation of Jesus’ birth. Next we added our exclamations to those of the angels and shepherds. Last week we put Jesus first with exaltations. This final week of December, as we look to the New Year, we embrace exhortation. I know this is not a very common word, but it means to communicate emphatically, urging others to action.

When I think of exhortation, I think of the apostle Paul. In each of his letters to the churches and to Timothy, he exhorted and encouraged, counselled and corrected, and spurred his readers to action with love. You know how you feel after you’ve heard a great sermon? You’re inspired, you’re motivated, you’re convicted to go out and do something good for someone else. You want to share God’s love and plan with others.

With our Christmas celebrations savored and enjoyed, and as we look to the new year, let’s become, like Paul, exhorters and encouragers. Let’s share the good news of Jesus’ birth, life and resurrection. Let’s step out in faith and help those around us. Let’s shine the “Light of the world” to everyone we meet. With exhortations, let’s encourage each other with love.

I thank God for each of you! And I thank you for joining me this week as we face the new year with joy and exhortations for everyone we meet.

Blessings and exhortations!

Happy New Year!
